Preventing EMI with EMR Shielding and Electronically Conductive Pigments

What is Electromagnetic radiation?

Electomagnetic Radiation or EMR is everywhere. The energy surrounds us in the form of radio waves, microwaves, X-rays and gamma rays. Even sunlight is a form of electromagnetic radiation.

What is Electromagnetic Interference?

EMI or Electromagnetic Interference is when a source admitting EMR generates a disturbance within an electrical circuit. The disturbance can result in errors, which can be a critical interruption in data transmission.


What requires EMR Shielding?

Electromagnetic radiation (EMR) is not only ubiquitous, but also inevitable with respect to modern electronic communication (LTE, 5G, Wifi, Bluetooth, NFC, radio, etc.). Due to the large number of various signal sources that are constantly communicating (e.g. autonomous driving), it must be ensured that there are no mutual interferences that could impact the performance of electronically sensitive components, in the worst case leading to critical malfunctions.


Consequently, in some sensitive industrial sectors such as medical technology, corresponding standards ensuring electromagnetic compatibility already exist. In general, a suitable protection of sensitive components against electromagnetic radiation can be obtained with a metallic cover, following the principle of the Faraday cage.


How could lightweight housings made of plastics prevent EMI?

An elegant way is to coat the inside of the housing with a paint formulation based on eConduct pigments from ECKART. This approach, by adding an electrically conductive paint in a subsequent step, also allows for shielding various designs of enclosures.

The eConduct product range from ECKART contains either flake shaped or spherical silver-coated glass, aluminum or copper substrates. The conductive pigments are provided in powder form. These pigments also provide an economic advantage over the use of high-cost precious metals, like silver.


EMR shielding does not need to be limited to only coatings. In addition, by using eConduct pigments in adhesives and sealants at the joints of housing parts, a conductive and thus shielding connection at joints can be created, too.  eConduct pigments can even be used in textiles.
